ZURICH, Switzerland, October 30, 2025 — ABB has been awarded the Maturity Level 5 (ML5) certification for its Functional Safety Management System (FSMS) by TÜV Rheinland, a leading global certification institute specializing in functional safety and cyber security.
This recognition — the highest achievable level within the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) framework — affirms ABB’s industry leadership and commitment to safety excellence, reliability, and compliance across its global operations.

The TÜV Rheinland FSMS ML5 certification has been granted to ABB’s Safety Execution Centers (SEC) located in Germany, Italy, Norway, and Singapore. These centers deliver specialized expertise and lifecycle safety support to customers operating in high-hazard industrial sectors, including energy, chemicals, and oil & gas.
“Achieving Maturity Level 5 certification demonstrates ABB’s deep commitment to ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability across all projects,” said Dr. Peter Terwiesch, President of ABB Process Automation.
“Our Safety Execution Centers combine technical rigor with local expertise, enabling customers to mitigate risk, protect people and assets, and maintain operational continuity in even the most demanding environments.”

Functional safety refers to the systems and processes that automatically protect people, equipment, and the environment when operations exceed defined safety limits. In industrial settings, this is typically managed through Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) — control systems that detect elevated risks and act automatically to bring processes to a safe state.
ABB’s safety approach is built upon international standards IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, ensuring that all safety systems are fit for purpose, tested rigorously, and maintained for consistent performance.

The ML5 certification represents TÜV Rheinland’s highest rating and confirms that ABB:
Operates with optimized safety processes and documented compliance to IEC 61511
Continuously improves its safety management performance through data-driven KPIs
Integrates functional safety and cyber security best practices throughout the system lifecycle
“Functional safety is fundamental to building resilient industrial operations,” said Marcello Gulinelli, Global Head of Safety, ABB Energy Industries.
“This certification reinforces ABB’s position as a trusted partner helping customers achieve higher safety integrity, compliance, and operational excellence.”
